How Do You Apply Tic Tac Tiles? (Installation Guide)
You’re probably wondering how to apply tic tac tiles and what type of surface you choose. Keep in mind that we recommend not using these tiles on shower walls (that is directly hit by water), rough stone surfaces, or textured wallpaper. However, choose smooth surfaces, and you can even install tic tac tiles over existing tiles.
1. Collect the Necessary Materials
To start with, collect the materials that you need for installation. You don’t require any heavy tools, and you’ll do the job without any mess. So, here’s what you’ll need:
- Tic Tac Tile Sheets
- A Leveler/ Chalk Line
- A Pencil & A Ruler
- A Pair of Scissors/ Box Cutters
2. Measure Your Space
Second of all, you have to measure your space for figuring out how many Tic Tac Tiles you need for your DIY project. These tiles come in a 10-inch and 12-inch size and 5 or 10 sheets per pack.
3. Clean the Surface
Once you’ve measured your space and figured out the number of tiles you need, clean the surface to get rid of any residue with a grease remover, such as Tri-sodium Phosphate (TSP). Make sure the surface is completely dry before you start applying the tiles.
4. Draw Guidelines (Row after Row)
This step is quite a lot important! You have to trace guidelines on the surface with a leveler or chalk line. In this way, draw a guideline for your first row and make sure your alignment is level and straight. Then, mark the rest of the surface following this method.
5. Cut and Save
Now, you have to cut the left side of your first tile straight by using a ruler and a pair of scissors. Then, you need to save the piece that you’ve already cut for the end to complete the DIY project.
6. Peel and Stick the Tiles
You’re now ready to install the tiles. At first, peel the backing of your first tile two inches without touching the adhesive surface and stick it according to the guidelines.
7. Align the Tiles
When you’re going to stick the second tile, you need to align it to the previous one. Don’t overlap the tiles as they’re exactly applied along the grout. Apply light pressure from left to right and press firmly along the grout lines for the best results.
8. Use Saved Tile to Finish
Do you remember you have a piece of tile that you’ve cut off your first tile? At the end of each row, you have to install that piece to fill the empty space of the last tile.
More Useful Tips for Installation
- Don’t apply these tiles on oily, greasy, and textured tiles.
- Apply them on painted or latex surfaces by preparing them with sandpaper.
- The temperature of the tiles and the surface should be around 70 degrees Fahrenheit before 12 hours and after 24 hours of installation.
- When it comes to cutting tiles for an electrical outlet, be careful, and take your time to accomplish the job accurately.
- Order a few extra pieces of tiles in case you ruin several tiles while cutting or installing.
My Experience with Tic Tac Tiles
Fortunately, I ran a project for my laundry room at the beginning of this year. It included tic tac tiles and some other essential materials and tools.
Once I went to the house of a friend of mine and saw pretty attractive kitchen backsplash with tic tac tiles. I thought it could be a good idea if I installed such tiles on the walls of my laundry room.
Here’s how I was able to give a brand new look to my laundry room.
#Before Installation: When I ordered Tic Tac Tiles online, I was a little confused about these tiles, whether they looked excellent or not.
But, surprisingly, they looked quite beautiful and the same as the real thing.
Once a morning, I received the tic tac tiles at my doorstep. Then, I was ready to install them on my laundry walls.
#During Installation: I thought installing the tic tac tiles would be simple. But, in the real sense, I was proved wrong.
I started the project by making a level line on my laundry wall. Then, I decided to start on one side and finish to the other end. Lining up the grout lines was a bit difficult, though, I easily did it.
The problem started when I found a couple of inches short on the right side. It looked ridiculous.
Then, I decided to correct the entire measurement to look right. Every time I repositioned the tiles, they lost a bit of stickiness.
I stopped the project for that day and waited for the next morning to start from the beginning.
I woke up the next morning and did the entire project with patience, taking much time to finish. This time I was successful.
#After Installation: Luckily, I had a few extra sheets. That’s why I was able to complete my project instead of ruining several tiles in the previous day.
Once I’d ended up the project, my laundry room looked beautiful. I was happy on that day.
