Installing ceramic tiles in the backsplash areas once required troweling a mortar and then carefully mounting the tiles in that mortar.
This was not an easy task and left to professionals most of the time.
All that changed with the advent of thin-set adhesives and cement-boards and made most tiling jobs easier for skilled DIYers. Later, these things also became the standard for professionals.

What Are Smart Tiles?
Smart Tiles are quite thick 3D stickers that stick to the wall of the kitchen and bathroom. They come with patented gel-o technology and look like tiled backsplashes.
These look just like the real tiles, and the appearance of the tiles is so convincing that many people mistake them for the real things.
These tiles are indirectly heat and moisture resistant. They’re easy to place, and you don’t need any additional tools, just make some cuts if there are outlets and switch covers.
If you make a mistake when placing a tile, simply pull up the tile and replace it with another. Remember that you cannot use a sheet again once you have pulled it up.

How to Install Smart Tiles
Your home may have walls that are not smooth and suitable for installing smart tiles. So, we don’t recommend you install these tiles over damaged, textured, dusty, and uneven surfaces. That’s why you need to choose flat surfaces before the installation.
Installing peel-and-stick tiles is much easier than expected. To do this, you may need some tools and follow a few steps. The process may require a couple of hours or more, so keep patience when doing this job.
You may need:
- Finished drywall
- Sponge and dry rag
- TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate)
- Pencil or Chalk
- Knife or cutting mat
- Metal ruler
#Prepare Your Wall: Before installing the tiles, you need to prepare the wall by doing some little cleanup.
First off, wash the surface with TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate), a powerful grease-remover, and provide the surface enough time to dry.
Instead, you can apply soapy water to clean the plastered, drywalls. Fill any holes or cracks on the wall to remove uneven surfaces.
#Trace Your Guidelines: Trace the guidelines by using a piece of chalk to ensure perfect alignment. If you encounter an uneven surface, you have to mark the height by using a pencil or a piece of chalk.
#Measure and Cut: Measure the space with a ruler and use a box cutter to cut the tiles as your requirements. Make sure you cut a hole or other shapes carefully and accurately.
#Peel and Stick: Pick a sheet of tiles and fold the protective paper in about 2 inches without touching the adhesive portion of the tile.
Align the sticky part with your guideline with light pressure because too much pressure won’t allow you to remove it in the future if needed.
Next, recheck the space and tile, whether you place it right or wrong.
Before installing on the top portion, complete the bottom row from left to right.
If you need to make cuts to allow for outlets and switch covers, keep the measurement and then use a cutter.
#How to Clean Smart Tiles: Once you’ve installed the tiles in your kitchen or bathroom, you don’t usually need to clean them.
But, if needed, just wipe off with soapy water by using a damp cloth. You can also apply a mild chemical cleaner, a cream cleanser, or a glass cleaner to the tiles.
My Experience of Using Smart Tiles
In this section, I’m going to share my experience on how I’ve completed the entire process.
Once I decided to install smart tiles on my kitchen backsplash to enhance beauty. Previously, the backsplash was covered with normal, white paint, as the owner painted before.
As I knew these tiles allow the users to remove without damaging the wall, I thought to use clean and sleek “Brown (Ravenna Farro)” tiles on my kitchen walls.
Once a morning, I found a package full of 40 sheets of tiles at my doorstep, as I ordered earlier.
I opened the package to have proper instructions on how to install the tiles, but they weren’t included, and I needed to check the smart tiles installation process on the company’s website.
According to the manufacturer, I started cleaning my backsplash wall. It was covered with small oil droplets, old grease, and some dust.
So, I took a few dry towels and a soft sponge. I followed the instructions, as written on the website. After half an hour, I finished off the cleanup, and my kitchen backsplash was ready to go.
After cleaning the backsplash, I had enough tiles to cover the wall. I took the measurements of the tiles and determined that I required approximately 22 sheets to cover my entire smart tile kitchen backsplash. Then, I used a pencil to draw a few straight, light guidelines on the wall.
I cut one side of the tile by using a box cutter so that the piece would align the top of the tiles to the guideline and the corner.
I made a mistake during sticking a tile to the wall, as it was slightly crooked. When I peeled it off, it removed a small amount of paint from the wall because my kitchen may not have the top quality paint.
Finally, the installation process took me a couple of hours to finish.
Once I’ve finished installing the peel-and-stick tiles all-around my backsplash, it seems that I owned a brand new kitchen once again.
The tiles started bouncing some natural light into space and brightened even more. As the sheets dry immediately, you don’t need to wait for them.
